How local customs shape pet memorials
Because cremation is so common in Scotland (about 74.5%[5] of people are cremated), outdoor memorials here often work alongside an urn indoors. A common pattern is to keep most of the ashes at home, bury a small portion in the garden and set a stone over it. That way the garden has a place to visit and nothing is lost if you move.

If you own your home, you can usually place a garden stone wherever you like; the stricter rules concern burying a body, not marking a spot. If you rent, ask your landlord before burying anything or setting a stone in concrete, and choose a stone you can lift and take with you. In England, the Environment Agency sets guidance on depth and distance from water for pet burials, and rules differ in Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland. A garden stone itself needs no permission. - Let your child help choose the spot. A place they can get to by themselves, or look at from their bedroom, tends to mean more to a child than any adult would guess.

- Ask them for one word or line to include. Years on, it's usually the child's own phrase that the whole family holds dearest.
- Show them the proof before you approve it, and let them check the spelling of the pet's name letter by letter.
- Keep the homemade stone beside the engraved one, or bring it indoors to a shelf once the permanent marker is set.

How do I set a memorial stone so it stays level?
Dig a shallow bed slightly larger than the stone, add 2 to 4 inches of gravel, tamp it firm and level it with a board and a spirit level. Settle the stone on top and check again. For a lawn, set it flush with the grass so a mower can pass over. Heavy upright stones need a proper footing.
Can I put a pet memorial stone in a rented garden?
Usually yes, as long as it isn't fixed in concrete and you don't bury a body without the landlord's agreement. The simplest approach for renters is a stone you can lift: set on gravel, a garden stone or engraved rock comes out in minutes. A stone with a sealed ashes compartment lets your pet move with you.
