Basel, Basel-Stadt
Stone makers, yards and delivery in Basel
For families with a garden or a house in Baselland, a planted memorial is a gentle choice: a bio urn with a tree or a flowering shrub, or a small stone in a quiet corner. Cold winters can crack thin materials, so choose natural stone or solid ceramic for anything left outside all year. Plant in spring or autumn, when the ground is workable and young roots can settle before summer heat or winter frost.
The Rhine is central to life in Basel, and many families feel drawn to a memorial connected to it: a river stone engraved with a name, a photo from a favorite spot on the promenade, or a quiet visit to the water on anniversaries. If you'd like to scatter a little ash by the river, check the local rules first.
Yards in Basel are often big enough for a home burial, so many stones here mark an actual grave. Before you dig, call your local utility-locating service (811 in the US) so gas, water and cable lines are marked. Keep the grave away from vegetable beds and any well, and think about where the stone will sit before you choose its size.
With roughly 177,000 residents, Basel is one of the Basel-Stadt communities we cover. The nearest larger centre is Zurich, about 46 miles (74 km) away, which is where some providers serving Basel are based.
If you want to compare providers, look at Bern (43 miles), Zurich (46 miles, a larger centre) and Zollikon (48 miles). Distance matters because pickup fees and the time until the ashes come back both grow with the drive.

How local customs shape pet memorials
In Switzerland, cremation is chosen for roughly 90%[1] of the people who die, and families often divide a pet's ashes: some in an urn, some for a grown child, some for the garden. Each household may then want its own marker. A set of small matching stones from one maker, each with the same name and dates, keeps the family connected across different homes.
bestatter.ch (Swiss funeral services association) (2020) is where the Switzerland figure comes from. It counts people; we use it because attitudes to cremating a pet in Basel tend to follow attitudes to cremation generally.
How the climate in Basel ages a memorial
One practical test works anywhere, including around Basel: walk through the oldest cemetery nearby and look at which headstones still read clearly after fifty years and which have crumbled or blurred. That's a free, local lesson in which stones and lettering styles survive your weather, and a monument maker can usually tell you what each one is made of.

Stone, engraving and setting: the real prices
Many European families keep their pet's ashes at home and set a small stone in the garden, which keeps costs modest. For the stone itself, compare a local stonemason with online makers who ship to Switzerland, and remember that heavy granite ships by freight. Ask for a written total in euros including delivery.

Home burial, rentals and pet cemeteries in Basel-Stadt
Pet cemeteries in Basel-Stadt each set their own marker rules: size, material, whether upright stones are allowed and who installs them. Human cemeteries generally don't accept pets. If you plan a cemetery stone, get the rules sheet first. For a home memorial, here's what we know about burial and scattering locally.
From first idea to a stone in the ground
- Note exactly where the grave is today. Pace it out from two fixed points, such as a fence post and the back step, and take a photo before the soil is raked flat.
- Cover the fresh soil with something heavy and flat, like a paving slab or an upturned planter, so digging animals leave it alone while it settles.
- Leave the permanent stone for a few weeks. In the first days everything seems to need deciding at once; this decision keeps until you've had some proper rest.
- Top up the soil as it sinks. A new grave often drops a few inches; add soil, firm it with your foot and wait for it to stop moving.
- Measure the settled patch once it has stopped sinking, then pick a marker broad enough to span nearly all of it, since a covered grave is far less inviting to dig.
- Set the finished stone on gravel over the firmed ground, and once a good downpour has been through, put a level on it a second time.
Keeping the memory close
Switzerland has one of the highest cremation rates in Europe, and many Basel families are comfortable keeping ashes at home in an urn or sharing them among relatives. In apartment living, a compact urn, a small keepsake box or jewelry holding a little ash fits easily on a shelf and suits the understated style many people here prefer. You can always add a larger piece later.

Questions people ask
Will I have to travel to Zurich to arrange things?
Not usually. Providers based in Zurich (roughly 46 miles from Basel) collect from here as a matter of routine, and the paperwork is done by email or phone. If you want to be present for a witnessed cremation, that is when the drive matters.
Why does the Basel page quote a human cremation rate?
Because it is the best local signal we have. bestatter.ch (Swiss funeral services association) (2020) reports about 90%[1] of Switzerland residents are cremated. There is no official pet equivalent, and inventing one would be worse than quoting a real, clearly labelled number.
Can a provider from a neighbouring town collect from Basel?
Usually yes. Bern is about 43 miles away, Zurich is about 46 miles away and Zollikon is about 48 miles away, all inside a normal collection radius. Get the mileage written into the quote so there is no surprise on the day.
Can I add a second pet's name to an existing memorial stone?
Often, yes, if there's room and the stone is suitable. Many monument engravers can cut new lettering on site or in the workshop, and matching the original typeface and depth is easiest if you know who made the stone. If you're ordering now and expect to add a name later, ask for blank space to be left below the first inscription.
Is a memorial stone a good idea if my pet was cremated?
Yes, and cremation gives you more freedom. The stone can sit over a small portion of buried ashes, hold ashes in a sealed compartment or simply mark a favorite spot, and there's no grave to settle, so you can set it straight away. You can also keep most of the ashes indoors and bury just a spoonful.
Can I have my pet's photo etched onto a stone?
Yes. Makers use a laser on polished black granite to create a gray-scale portrait. Results depend on the picture: send the original file, taken in daylight, with your pet looking toward the camera. Dark pets on dark backgrounds and pale pets on pale ones lose their outline, so ask for background removal and approve a proof.
