A lasting stone for your pet in Zurich
Most families in Zurich want something simple: a name, the years and a line that sounds like home. Here's how to get that engraved on a stone that lasts outdoors.
- Wording that fits a small stone
- Flush, raised or with an ashes compartment
- No pressure: a stone can wait until you're ready

Zurich, Switzerland
What getting a pet stone made in Zurich is like
Lake Zurich, the Limmat and the forests of the Uetliberg and Zürichberg are places many families associate with their pets. Scattering in a forest clearing often feels more personal than a busy lakeside promenade. Check the rules for public land and the lake, and ask permission before using private land. Some families keep a little back to keep at home.
Switzerland has one of the highest cremation rates in the world, and keeping ashes, or scattering them in a meaningful place, is widely accepted in Zurich. For a pet, that might mean a small ceramic vessel, a wooden box, a paw print on slate, or a ring holding a trace of ashes. In a compact apartment, something small and portable is usually the easiest fit.
Heavy stones are easier to set with help. If you're already having landscaping done in Zurich, ask the crew to place the memorial while they're there with a compactor and a level. Some monument companies also set stones for a fee, which is worth considering for anything over about 50 lb or with a separate base.
With roughly 415,000 residents, Zurich is the largest of the 3 Switzerland communities we cover.
Zurich sits within easy reach of Zollikon (3 miles), Kusnacht (4 miles) and Lucerne (25 miles). A provider based in any of them will usually collect from Zurich; ask what the mileage adds to the bill.

How local customs shape pet memorials
In places where cremation is as common as it is in Switzerland, where about 90%[1] of people are cremated, ashes give families more freedom. A stone doesn't have to sit over a grave. It can mark a scattering spot, hold a portion of ashes in a cavity or stand in a patio planter, and it can move with you when you do.

Which stones survive the weather in Zurich
Think about the seasons you actually get around Zurich. Install when the ground is soft and the weather is comfortable, check any ashes compartment seal before the wettest or coldest part of the year, and give the stone a gentle clean with plain water once or twice a year.

How much to budget for a pet stone
In Zurich, as in much of Europe, the local stonemason who makes human headstones is often the best place to ask about a pet marker. Many will cut a small stone from leftover material. Ask for a written price covering the stone, lettering, any image and delivery, and check whether a pet cemetery near you limits marker sizes.

Where a pet stone can go in Switzerland
Some human cemeteries now have a pet section or accept a pet's ashes in a family plot, while many still refuse animals entirely. If you'd like your pet near relatives, ask the cemetery office for its written policy on pets, ashes and marker sizes before buying anything. Below is what we know about pet burial and scattering in Switzerland.
Zurich's own guidance is published by City of Zürich Entsorgung + Recycling Zürich; it covers public collection, which is separate from arranging a private cremation.
A simple plan for your pet's memorial stone
- Work out what the stone is marking: a grave, buried ashes, a scattering spot or simply a place your pet loved.
- If ashes will go inside the stone, run the cavity's dimensions through our urn size calculator to be sure everything will fit.
- Choose dense stone and carved lettering. Anything painted or printed onto the surface looks sharp when new and dulls after a few seasons of sun and rain.
- Keep the wording short. On a typical small marker you get two or three lines, each holding around 14 to 16 capitals.
- Get written quotes from a few makers who deliver where you live, and find out how they handle a stone that's chipped in transit.
- Sign off the proof, and think about placement: a bed of gravel underneath, a spirit level on top, and enough distance from trees that roots won't tilt it.
Keeping the memory close
Many Zurich homes have a balcony rather than a garden, and a memorial can fit that space: a planter with a memorial plant, a small stone among flowers, or a biodegradable urn in a large pot. Swiss winters are hard on outdoor materials, so stone, glazed ceramic and sealed metal outlast painted wood. Indoor memorials suit rented flats. A framed photo beside the ashes can be enough.

Questions people ask
Why does the Zurich page quote a human cremation rate?
Because it is the best local signal we have. bestatter.ch (Swiss funeral services association) (2020) reports about 90%[1] of Switzerland residents are cremated. There is no official pet equivalent, and inventing one would be worse than quoting a real, clearly labelled number.
Can a provider from a neighbouring town collect from Zurich?
Usually yes. Zollikon is about 3 miles away, Kusnacht is about 4 miles away and Lucerne is about 25 miles away, all inside a normal collection radius. Get the mileage written into the quote so there is no surprise on the day.
Does my HOA need to approve a pet memorial stone in Zurich?
Usually not for a small stone in a backyard bed, but read your covenants. Some associations restrict permanent features, anything set in concrete or anything visible from the street. A flush marker or engraved garden stone in the back is the least likely to raise questions; an upright headstone in the front yard is the most.
How heavy is a granite pet grave marker?
Granite weighs roughly 165 to 170 lb per cubic foot, so a 12 x 6 inch marker 2 inches thick weighs about 14 lb, and a 16 x 8 inch marker 3 inches thick is close to 40 lb. Upright headstones with a base can weigh well over 100 lb. Heavier pieces usually ship by freight and may be delivered to the curb only.
Is a personal memorial allowed in a park near Zurich?
Almost never. Parks departments generally don't allow personal stones, and scattering ashes may need permission. Some parks offices sell dedicated benches or trees with a small plaque, sometimes including a pet's name, though waiting lists can be long. The usual approach is to honor the park in the wording and set the stone somewhere private.
How long does it take to make a pet memorial stone?
Small engraved stones can be ready in one to a few weeks, while made-to-order granite takes longer, and a proof you have to approve adds a few days. US makers quote 2–4 weeks[4] for made-to-order granite markers as a guide. Ask makers serving Zurich for their current lead time before you plan an anniversary around it.
