Setagaya, Tokyo
Local makers and practical limits in Setagaya
Setagaya is famous for a temple said to be the birthplace of the beckoning-cat figure, and the neighbourhoods here are full of small shrines and temples where people leave offerings. That culture of small, personal remembrance carries over to pets: incense and flowers beside an urn, a memorial tablet, or a joint memorial service for animals held once a year.
Setagaya homes are compact, so most families choose a small memorial: a palm-sized urn on a shelf or beside the family altar, a pendant holding a fragment of bone or ash, a memorial tablet with the pet's name, or a framed paw print. Some divide the remains between a keepsake at home and a temple's shared memorial. Ask for prints or fur clippings at the first contact.
Community gardens and allotments are precious in a city like Setagaya, and some owners hope to bury a pet or set a stone in their plot. Most garden rules forbid burials and permanent fixtures because plots change hands. Ask the garden's coordinator; a small movable engraved rock in a container is sometimes allowed when a grave isn't.
With roughly 940,000 residents, Setagaya is the 2nd-largest of the 3 Tokyo communities we cover.
Our pages for Tokyo (2 miles, a larger centre), Minato (6 miles) and Kawasaki (8 miles) describe the same choices from those towns' point of view, and the providers overlap, so a quote from one often covers Setagaya as well.

Local traditions and what they mean for a pet stone
In Japan, cremation is chosen for roughly 99.97%[1] of the people who die, and families often divide a pet's ashes: some in an urn, some for a grown child, some for the garden. Each household may then want its own marker. A set of small matching stones from one maker, each with the same name and dates, keeps the family connected across different homes.
The Japan figure comes from Cremation Society of Great Britain, International Cremation Statistics 2023 (2023). It describes people, not pets, so read it as a sign of local attitudes rather than a pet statistic.
Choosing a stone that suits Setagaya's seasons
We don't have local climate records for Setagaya, so think about your own winters and summers. If the ground freezes for weeks at a time, choose dense granite set on gravel. If summers are fiercely sunny, avoid resin and painted designs. If it's damp and shady, expect moss and choose deep carved lettering.

Pet memorial stone prices for families in Setagaya
In much of Asia, a pet's ashes more often go to a columbarium or a home shrine than under a garden stone, and published prices reflect that. In Singapore, for example, one provider's columbarium niches start at SGD 300 for the first year with SGD 180 yearly renewal[5]. The table sets that beside US stone prices for scale.
The full price table by product is on our Tokyo page, and the services page explains what each option includes.

Home burial, rentals and pet cemeteries in Tokyo
Some human cemeteries now have a pet section or accept a pet's ashes in a family plot, while many still refuse animals entirely. If you'd like your pet near relatives, ask the cemetery office for its written policy on pets, ashes and marker sizes before buying anything. Below is what we know about pet burial and scattering in Tokyo.
In Japan, burying animals in public places such as parks is illegal[7], and many families place ashes in a pet memorial park, a temple columbarium or a home altar rather than a garden grave. A small engraved stone or plaque for a home shrine or balcony is common. If you have private land, a garden stone can mark buried ashes; check any local rules first.
From first idea to a stone in the ground
- Work out what the stone is marking: the body itself, ashes in the ground, the place where ashes were scattered, or just a favorite corner of the yard.
- If ashes will go inside the stone, check the cavity size against your pet's ashes with our urn size calculator.
- Choose dense stone and carved lettering. Painted or printed designs look bright on day one but fade outdoors.
- Keep the wording short. Most small stones fit two or three lines of 14 to 16 capital letters.
- Get written quotes from makers who serve your area, and ask what happens if the stone arrives damaged.
- Sign off the proof, and think about placement: a bed of gravel underneath, a spirit level on top, and enough distance from trees that roots won't tilt it.
Making the stone a place to visit
Setagaya's cherry trees along the Tama River and in its big parks bloom each spring, and many families decide on a lasting memorial as the seasons turn. A potted tree or shrub with a small memorial stone on a balcony or doorstep, a photo stand with a seasonal flower, or jewellery holding a pinch of ashes all fit a small Tokyo home.

Questions people ask
Is cremation common in Japan?
For people, yes: about 99.97%[1] of Japan deaths end in cremation, according to Cremation Society of Great Britain, International Cremation Statistics 2023 (2023). Nobody publishes the same figure for pets, but in our experience pet choices in Setagaya follow the human pattern closely, so cremation is the default most families here start from.
Can a provider from a neighbouring town collect from Setagaya?
Usually yes. Tokyo is about 2 miles away, Minato is about 6 miles away and Kawasaki is about 8 miles away, all inside a normal collection radius. Get the mileage written into the quote so there is no surprise on the day.
Can I have my pet's photo etched onto a stone?
Yes. Makers use a laser on polished black granite to create a gray-scale portrait. Results depend on the picture: send the original file, taken in daylight, with your pet looking toward the camera. Dark pets on dark backgrounds and pale pets on pale ones lose their outline, so ask for background removal and approve a proof.
Is a personal memorial allowed in a park near Setagaya?
Almost never. Parks departments generally don't allow personal stones, and scattering ashes may need permission. Some parks offices sell dedicated benches or trees with a small plaque, sometimes including a pet's name, though waiting lists can be long. The usual approach is to honor the park in the wording and set the stone somewhere private.
Are there pet cemeteries near Setagaya that accept memorial stones?
Most pet cemeteries allow some kind of marker, but each sets its own rules on size, material and whether upright stones are permitted, and many charge a setting fee. Ask the cemetery for its written rules before ordering. Our pet cemetery marker checklist lists the questions worth asking.
Is a memorial stone a good idea if my pet was cremated?
Yes, and cremation gives you more freedom. The stone can sit over a small portion of buried ashes, hold ashes in a sealed compartment or simply mark a favorite spot, and there's no grave to settle, so you can set it straight away. You can also keep most of the ashes indoors and bury just a spoonful.
