Pet Memorial Stones in Tokyo

Tokyo, Japan

Pet Memorial Stones in Tokyo: what to know

Across Tokyo, a stone often outlives the house it was placed in. Families sell up, downsize or move for work, and a memorial set in concrete stays behind. That's why so many of the stones we see recommended for Tokyo gardens sit on a gravel bed: they look permanent but lift out in an afternoon if life changes.

Frost is the single most useful thing to know when choosing a pet memorial stone in Tokyo. Where lows stay below freezing for months, slate, concrete and cast resin are more likely to crack, and granite set on a gravel base is the safest choice. Where frost is rare, you can choose on looks: slate, river rock and sandstone all age gracefully.

What local customs suggest for your pet's stone

Because cremation is so common in Tokyo (about 99.97%[1] of people are cremated), outdoor memorials here often work alongside an urn indoors. A common pattern is to keep most of the ashes at home, bury a small portion in the garden and set a stone over it. That way the garden has a place to visit and nothing is lost if you move.

We take the Tokyo percentage from Cremation Society of Great Britain, International Cremation Statistics 2023 (2023). It refers to people; attitudes to cremating a pet tend to follow it.

How much to budget for a pet stone

In much of Asia, a pet's ashes more often go to a columbarium or a home shrine than under a garden stone, and published prices reflect that. In Singapore, for example, one provider's columbarium niches start at SGD 300 for the first year with SGD 180 yearly renewal[2]. The table sets that beside US stone prices for scale.

Rules on burying animals can be strict in parts of Asia; in Japan, for example, burying animals in public places such as parks is illegal[3]. That's why many families in Tokyo choose a private memorial park or a stone at home rather than a grave. We haven't found local stone price surveys, so the table shows US figures for comparison.

Permissions worth checking in Tokyo

A pet grave and its stone stay with the house when you sell, so it's worth thinking ahead. Some owners mention a pet burial to buyers, and a stone set on gravel rather than concrete is easy to take with you. None of this needs a permit in most places; the notes below cover burial and scattering in Tokyo.

In Japan, burying animals in public places such as parks is illegal[3], and many families place ashes in a pet memorial park, a temple columbarium or a home altar rather than a garden grave. A small engraved stone or plaque for a home shrine or balcony is common. If you have private land, a garden stone can mark buried ashes; check any local rules first.

How to choose, order and set a pet stone

  1. Work out what the stone is marking: the body itself, ashes in the ground, the place where ashes were scattered, or just a favorite corner of the yard.
  2. If ashes will go inside the stone, check the cavity size against your pet's ashes with our urn size calculator.
  3. Choose dense stone and carved lettering. Anything painted or printed onto the surface looks sharp when new and dulls after a few seasons of sun and rain.
  4. Keep the wording short. Most small stones fit two or three lines of 14 to 16 capital letters.
  5. Get written quotes from makers who serve your area, and ask what happens if the stone arrives damaged.
  6. Sign off the proof, and think about placement: a bed of gravel underneath, a spirit level on top, and enough distance from trees that roots won't tilt it.

Small rituals that keep the stone meaningful

Grief after a pet can hit harder than people around you expect. In the RSPCA's survey of bereaved owners, 66.9%[10] said they were surprised by how intense it was. If sitting by the stone brings more pain than comfort for now, that's normal too. Free lines such as the Cornell Pet Loss Support Hotline are staffed by people who understand.

Questions people ask

What if I rent my home in Tokyo?

Choose a memorial you can take with you. A garden stone set on gravel lifts out in minutes, and a stone with a sealed ashes compartment keeps your pet with you if you move. Ask your landlord before burying anything or setting a stone in concrete, and avoid anything that changes the garden permanently.

How do heavy granite stones get delivered to rural parts of Tokyo?

Large granite pieces tend to go by truck freight, and the driver may leave them at the roadside or ask you to collect from a depot. Before paying, ask who unloads it, how far it will be carried and who pays if a corner is chipped in transit. Some local monument makers deliver and set stones on their regular runs.

Is a local stonemason or an online maker better in Tokyo?

It depends on the stone. For heavy granite and upright headstones, a local monument company that delivers and sets the stone is often worth it. For small engraved stones and river rocks, online makers are usually cheaper and include lettering. Whichever you choose, approve a written proof before anything is cut.

When is the best time of year to set a pet memorial stone in Tokyo?

Late spring and early fall are easiest in most places: the ground is soft enough to dig and the weather is comfortable. In freezing areas, wait until the ground thaws. A fresh grave also needs a month or two to settle before a heavy stone goes on it, so a temporary marker is a good first step.

Can I bury my pet at home in Tokyo and mark it with a stone?

Often yes, with conditions such as burial depth, distance from wells and water, and whether you own the land. Cities, homeowners' associations and landlords can be stricter than the wider rules. The stone itself rarely needs permission; the burial is what's regulated. Each city page lists the local notes we have.

How much does a pet memorial stone cost in Tokyo?

We haven't found a reliable local price survey, so compare two or three written quotes from local stonemasons and online makers. For scale, US sellers list engraved garden stones from ~$39[11] and flat granite markers from $157.95[6]. Freight on heavy granite can add a lot.
