Nara, Japan
Local makers and practical limits in Nara
Many Japanese families remember a pet at Obon in August or during the spring and autumn higan weeks around the equinoxes, with flowers, incense or a visit to the grave. A physical memorial, whether an urn on the family altar, a stone in the garden or a keepsake, gives those moments a focus. In Nara's humid summers, glazed ceramic and stone keep better than wood or paper.
Japan has the highest cremation rate in the world, and memorial practices for pets are well established. In Nara, many families keep ashes at home in a small urn on a family altar, alongside photos and flowers, while others place them in a pet memorial at a temple. A keepsake, such as jewellery holding a few ashes or a paw print impression, is also common.
Heavy stones are easier to set with help. If you're already having landscaping done in Nara, ask the crew to place the memorial while they're there with a compactor and a level. Some monument companies also set stones for a fee, which is worth considering for anything over about 50 lb or with a separate base.
Nara is home to about 367,000 people. Osaka, roughly 17 miles off, is the closest larger centre, and a share of the providers who cover Nara run from there.
Nara sits within easy reach of Osaka (17 miles, a larger centre), Kyoto (23 miles, a larger centre) and Kobe (35 miles, a larger centre). A provider based in any of them will usually collect from Nara; ask what the mileage adds to the bill.

How local customs shape pet memorials
In high-cremation places such as Japan, with 99.97%[1] of human deaths ending in cremation, a pet stone often stands in for a grave that never existed. That can matter more than people expect. Having a fixed place to go on an anniversary, even a small stone in a flower bed, gives grief a destination that an urn on a shelf sometimes doesn't.
Cremation Society of Great Britain, International Cremation Statistics 2023 (2023) is where the Japan figure comes from. It counts people; we use it because attitudes to cremating a pet in Nara tend to follow attitudes to cremation generally.
How the climate in Nara ages a memorial
Think about the seasons you actually get around Nara. Install when the ground is soft and the weather is comfortable, check any ashes compartment seal before the wettest or coldest part of the year, and give the stone a gentle clean with plain water once or twice a year.

Stone, engraving and setting: the real prices
Garden space is limited in many Asian cities, so a memorial stone for a pet in Nara is often small: an engraved plaque for a balcony planter, a stone for a family garden elsewhere or a marker at a pet memorial park. Ask any maker for a written price in local currency that includes lettering and delivery.
Rather than repeat the price table on every city page, we keep one for Japan: Japan costs. What each service includes is on the services page.

Home burial, rentals and pet cemeteries in Japan
Rented homes, condos and strata properties need a different plan. You usually can't bury a pet in shared grounds, and anything fixed in place may have to be removed when you leave. A stone with a sealed ashes compartment, or a heavy engraved rock on a patio, gives you a memorial without breaking the lease. Here's the local picture for Japan.
In Japan, burying animals in public places such as parks is illegal[6], and many families place ashes in a pet memorial park, a temple columbarium or a home altar rather than a garden grave. A small engraved stone or plaque for a home shrine or balcony is common. If you have private land, a garden stone can mark buried ashes; check any local rules first.
Ordering a pet memorial stone, step by step
- Decide how much of the ashes belongs with the stone: all of them sealed inside, a small portion buried beneath, or none, with the stone simply marking a place your pet loved.
- If the stone will hold ashes, ask the maker for the cavity's volume and set it against the size of the bag or box that came back from the crematory. Our urn size calculator gives a rough figure for how much room the ashes take.
- Keep the ashes in a sealed waterproof pouch rather than pouring them straight into the stone; unbagged, they absorb damp and set into lumps.
- Place the stone as soon as it arrives if you like. There's no soil to wait on, so families often choose a meaningful date, a birthday or the first mild weekend of the year.
- Pick a spot that stays yours, a corner of the patio or a big pot, for instance, if moving house is a possibility.
- Write down what's inside the stone and keep the note with your household papers, so nobody later mistakes it for a garden ornament.
Making the stone a place to visit
Nara's temples and shrines, and the deer that roam freely around Nara Park, give the city a deep sense of the sacred. Many Buddhist temples in Japan offer memorial services for pets, and some families hold one at the 49th day or on anniversaries. If you want a memorial service, ask about the options, and choose whatever feels right for your family.

Questions people ask
Which nearby towns can I compare with Nara?
The closest communities we cover are Osaka (about 17 miles), Kyoto (about 23 miles) and Kobe (about 35 miles). Providers based in those places often serve Nara too. Ask each one for a written total that includes collection, so the distance is priced in.
Where are the providers that serve Nara actually based?
Some are local, and some run from Osaka, about 17 miles away. That is normal for a city this size. What matters is the collection time they quote for Nara and whether the drive is priced into the total, so ask both up front.
How do Japan attitudes to cremation compare?
Cremation Society of Great Britain, International Cremation Statistics 2023 (2023) puts the Japan human cremation rate at about 99.97%[1]. We show it on the Nara page because pet aftercare choices tend to track it: where cremation is normal for people, communal and private pet cremation are both easy to find.
Is a personal memorial allowed in a park near Nara?
Almost never. Parks departments generally don't allow personal stones, and scattering ashes may need permission. Some parks offices sell dedicated benches or trees with a small plaque, sometimes including a pet's name, though waiting lists can be long. The usual approach is to honor the park in the wording and set the stone somewhere private.
Can I have my pet's photo etched onto a stone?
Yes. Makers use a laser on polished black granite to create a gray-scale portrait. Results depend on the picture: send the original file, taken in daylight, with your pet looking toward the camera. Dark pets on dark backgrounds and pale pets on pale ones lose their outline, so ask for background removal and approve a proof.
Is it too late to get a stone for a pet who died years ago?
Not at all. Many families order a stone months or years later, once they know where they'll settle or when the grief has softened enough to choose words. If you're not sure exactly where your pet was buried, a stone can mark the general area or a spot in the garden they loved.
