In high-cremation places such as Japan, with 99.97%[1] of human deaths ending in cremation, a pet stone often stands in for a grave that never existed. That can matter more than people expect. Having a fixed place to go on an anniversary, even a small stone in a flower bed, gives grief a destination that an urn on a shelf sometimes doesn't.

Permissions worth checking in Hyogo
Pet cemeteries in Hyogo each set their own marker rules: size, material, whether upright stones are allowed and who installs them. Human cemeteries generally don't accept pets. In Japan, burying animals in public places such as parks is illegal[6], and many families place ashes in a pet memorial park, a temple columbarium or a home altar rather than a garden grave. A small engraved stone or plaque for a home shrine or balcony is common. If you have private land, a garden stone can mark buried ashes; check any local rules first.
How to choose, order and set a pet stone
- Note exactly where the grave is today. Pace it out from two fixed points, such as a fence post and the back step, and take a photo before the soil is raked flat.
- Cover the fresh soil with something heavy and flat, a slab or an overturned pot will do, to stop anything from digging there while the ground firms.
- Leave the permanent stone for a few weeks. In the first days everything seems to need deciding at once; this decision keeps until you've had some proper rest.
- Top up the soil as it sinks. A new grave often drops a few inches; add soil, firm it with your foot and wait for it to stop moving.
- Measure the settled patch once it has stopped sinking, then pick a marker broad enough to span nearly all of it, since a covered grave is far less inviting to dig.
- Set the finished stone on gravel over the firmed ground, and once a good downpour has been through, put a level on it a second time.

Can a provider from a neighbouring town collect from Kobe?
