A lasting stone for your pet in Yokohama

Yokohama, Kanagawa

Stone makers, yards and delivery in Yokohama

Yokohama homes range from compact apartments to hillside houses, but most families keep memorials small: a compact urn on a shelf, a photo and a few favorite treats, much like a home altar. If you'd like an outdoor memorial, a small stone or plaque on a balcony or garden corner works well. Choose weatherproof materials that handle humidity and typhoon rain.

Many temples in the Yokohama area accept pet ashes into shared memorial vaults or hold services for animals, and some families place part of the ashes there while keeping the rest at home. If you'd like to do both, ask for a small portion to be set aside in a keepsake urn or pendant before the main urn is sealed. A paw print pressed in clay before cremation is another lasting keepsake.

With so many makers serving Yokohama, the hard part is comparing like with like. Ask every maker the same questions: the exact stone type, its thickness, how the letters are cut, whether a proof is included, the delivery method and the total price. A quote that leaves out setting or freight isn't cheaper, just incomplete.

Yokohama's population is around 3,724,000, the largest of the 2 Kanagawa communities we cover.

If you want to compare providers, look at Kawasaki (7 miles), Setagaya (14 miles) and Tokyo (16 miles, a larger centre). Distance matters because pickup fees and the time until the ashes come back both grow with the drive.

What local customs suggest for your pet's stone

Because cremation is so common in Japan (about 99.97%[1] of people are cremated), outdoor memorials here often work alongside an urn indoors. A common pattern is to keep most of the ashes at home, bury a small portion in the garden and set a stone over it. That way the garden has a place to visit and nothing is lost if you move.

The Japan percentage above is from Cremation Society of Great Britain, International Cremation Statistics 2023 (2023) and refers to human funerals. Treat it as context for Yokohama, not as a count of pets.

Choosing a stone that suits Yokohama's seasons

Without local weather data for Yokohama, the safest approach is to ask the maker whether the stone is rated for outdoor use in your conditions, and to set it on a few inches of compacted gravel so rain drains away. A stone that sits dry lasts longer in any climate.

Budgeting for the stone, lettering and delivery

Rules on burying animals can be strict in parts of Asia; in Japan, for example, burying animals in public places such as parks is illegal[5]. That's why many families in Yokohama choose a private memorial park or a stone at home rather than a grave. We haven't found local stone price surveys, so the table shows US figures for comparison.

The Kanagawa price table breaks costs down by product; our services page explains what sits behind each line.

Burial, HOA and cemetery rules in Kanagawa

A pet grave and its stone stay with the house when you sell, so it's worth thinking ahead. Some owners mention a pet burial to buyers, and a stone set on gravel rather than concrete is easy to take with you. None of this needs a permit in most places; the notes below cover burial and scattering in Kanagawa.

In Japan, burying animals in public places such as parks is illegal[5], and many families place ashes in a pet memorial park, a temple columbarium or a home altar rather than a garden grave. A small engraved stone or plaque for a home shrine or balcony is common. If you have private land, a garden stone can mark buried ashes; check any local rules first.

From first idea to a stone in the ground

  1. Decide whether the stone should travel with you. If you rent, or a move is on the horizon, keep it light enough to carry to the next house.
  2. Pick a spot you'll see every day, from a window or the back door, rather than a far corner you rarely visit.
  3. Keep it clear of pipes and roots. Have buried utilities located before you put a spade in, and stay well back from the base of any tree.
  4. Order a stone rated for outdoor use in your climate, with sandblasted lettering at least an eighth of an inch deep.
  5. Check the proof carefully. Names, dates and punctuation can't be changed once the stone is cut.
  6. Install it, then look after it lightly: a soft brush and plain water once or twice a year is plenty.

Keeping the memory close

Yokohama's port heritage gives some families a connection to the sea, and a memorial with a nautical touch, like an anchor charm or a small urn glazed in ocean blue, can reflect a life spent near the harbor. Scattering ashes at sea has its own rules and etiquette, so check first. Keepsake jewelry and fur lockets are small ways to keep a pet close during a busy commuting life.

Questions people ask

Why does the Yokohama page quote a human cremation rate?

Because it is the best local signal we have. Cremation Society of Great Britain, International Cremation Statistics 2023 (2023) reports about 99.97%[1] of Japan residents are cremated. There is no official pet equivalent, and inventing one would be worse than quoting a real, clearly labelled number.

Can a provider from a neighbouring town collect from Yokohama?

Usually yes. Kawasaki is about 7 miles away, Setagaya is about 14 miles away and Tokyo is about 16 miles away, all inside a normal collection radius. Get the mileage written into the quote so there is no surprise on the day.

Does my HOA need to approve a pet memorial stone in Yokohama?

Usually not for a small stone in a backyard bed, but read your covenants. Some associations restrict permanent features, anything set in concrete or anything visible from the street. A flush marker or engraved garden stone in the back is the least likely to raise questions; an upright headstone in the front yard is the most.

What size stone suits a cat's grave compared with a dog's?

A cat's grave is small, so a flat stone around 12 by 6 inches, or an engraved river rock, marks it well. A medium or large dog's grave is longer, and many families choose a 16 by 8 inch marker or bigger, set at the head end. Our memorial stone planner helps you check whether the wording fits the size you choose.

How heavy is a granite pet grave marker?

Granite weighs roughly 165 to 170 lb per cubic foot, so a 12 x 6 inch marker 2 inches thick weighs about 14 lb, and a 16 x 8 inch marker 3 inches thick is close to 40 lb. Upright headstones with a base can weigh well over 100 lb. Heavier pieces usually ship by freight and may be delivered to the curb only.

Can I have my pet's photo etched onto a stone?

Yes. Makers use a laser on polished black granite to create a gray-scale portrait. Results depend on the picture: send the original file, taken in daylight, with your pet looking toward the camera. Dark pets on dark backgrounds and pale pets on pale ones lose their outline, so ask for background removal and approve a proof.
