Pet Memorial Stones in Hong Kong Island: what to know
Across Hong Kong Island, a stone often outlives the house it was placed in. Families sell up, downsize or move for work, and a memorial set in concrete stays behind. That's why so many of the stones we see recommended for Hong Kong Island gardens sit on a gravel bed: they look permanent but lift out in an afternoon if life changes.
Monument companies, the businesses that make human headstones, are spread across Hong Kong Island, and many will take on a small pet marker. They're often the best source for heavy granite and upright stones because they deliver and set them. For smaller engraved stones, online makers ship almost anywhere in Hong Kong Island, often with lettering included.

Burial, cremation and headstones in Hong Kong Island
Because cremation is so common in Hong Kong Island (about 96.96%[1] of people are cremated), outdoor memorials here often work alongside an urn indoors. A common pattern is to keep most of the ashes at home, bury a small portion in the garden and set a stone over it. That way the garden has a place to visit and nothing is lost if you move.
Cremation Society of Great Britain, International Cremation Statistics 2023 (2023) publishes the Hong Kong Island rate we quote. Read it as the local custom around cremation rather than as pet data.
Pet memorial stone prices for families in Hong Kong Island
In Hong Kong Island, pet memorial parks and funeral providers often sell stones or plaques as part of a package. Packages can be convenient, but ask for the price of the stone and lettering on its own so you can compare it with a local stonemason or an online maker. The table shows published reference prices.
Rules on burying animals can be strict in parts of Asia; in Japan, for example, burying animals in public places such as parks is illegal[2]. That's why many families in Hong Kong Island choose a private memorial park or a stone at home rather than a grave. We haven't found local stone price surveys, so the table shows US figures for comparison.
| Item | Published price | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Columbarium niche, Singapore | SGD 300 first year[3] | SGD 180 yearly renewal |
| Municipal pet collection, Tokyo ward | JPY 3,000[4] | Communal; ashes are not returned |
| Engraved garden stone (US) | from $38.95[5] | For scale; no local stone survey found |

What Hong Kong Island allows for pet graves and markers
Some human cemeteries now have a pet section or accept a pet's ashes in a family plot, while many still refuse animals entirely. If you'd like your pet near relatives, ask the cemetery office for its written policy on pets, ashes and marker sizes before buying anything. Below is what we know about pet burial and scattering in Hong Kong Island.
In Hong Kong, space is the main constraint, and most families keep ashes at home or place them with a pet memorial provider. A small engraved stone or plaque for a balcony, windowsill or niche is a common memorial. Hot, humid summers encourage mold on porous stone, so polished granite or glazed ceramic keeps its lettering clearest. Ask providers exactly what a memorial package includes.
What to do first, and what can wait
- Mark the spot simply for now. A flat paver, a potted plant or a ring of pebbles holds the place while the ground settles and you think about wording.
- Decide where the stone will live long term: your garden, a pet cemetery, a planter or somewhere that can move with you.
- Choose the material for your climate. Where winters bite and summers scorch, granite holds up; in gentler, drier places slate or a river rock does fine.
- Write the wording and count the letters. On most small stones there's room for a name, the years and a single brief line; the memorial stone planner will tell you whether yours fits.
- Ask two or three makers for written quotes that include lettering, any photo, delivery and setting.
- Approve a proof before anything is cut. Check spelling with someone else in the house.
- Set the stone on compacted gravel so it drains and stays level, and add a plant beside it if you like.
Remembering your pet beside the stone
A memorial bench beside the stone gives the spot a use: somewhere to sit with a coffee where your dog used to sprawl, or to read where your cat used to sun itself. Our guide to planning a memorial bench covers sizes, weight and whether plaques can be replaced later.

Questions people ask
Do pet cemeteries in Hong Kong Island allow any memorial stone?
No. Each pet cemetery sets its own rules on marker size, material, flush or upright style and who installs it, and many charge a setting fee. Ask for the written rules before you order a stone. Our pet cemetery marker checklist covers what to ask.
How much does a pet memorial stone cost in Hong Kong Island?
We haven't found a reliable local price survey, so compare two or three written quotes from local stonemasons and online makers. For scale, US sellers list engraved garden stones from ~$39[9] and flat granite markers from $157.95[6]. Freight on heavy granite can add a lot.
Can I place a memorial stone for my pet in a public park in Hong Kong Island?
Generally no. Public land managers rarely permit private markers, and some also restrict scattering without the landowner's or local authority's consent. Some councils and parks departments offer memorial benches or trees with a dedication plaque. Most families remember the park in the stone's wording and set the stone itself at home.
Which stone lasts longest outdoors in Hong Kong Island?
Granite, almost everywhere. It barely absorbs water, so it survives freeze-thaw, and carved lettering doesn't fade in sun. Slate and river rock last well in mild, dry places; sandstone, concrete and cast resin are the most likely to crack, soften or fade. Deep sandblasted lettering matters as much as the stone.
Is a local stonemason or an online maker better in Hong Kong Island?
It depends on the stone. For heavy granite and upright headstones, a local monument company that delivers and sets the stone is often worth it. For small engraved stones and river rocks, online makers are usually cheaper and include lettering. Whichever you choose, approve a written proof before anything is cut.
When is the best time of year to set a pet memorial stone in Hong Kong Island?
Late spring and early fall are easiest in most places: the ground is soft enough to dig and the weather is comfortable. In freezing areas, wait until the ground thaws. A fresh grave also needs a month or two to settle before a heavy stone goes on it, so a temporary marker is a good first step.
