Gangnam, Seoul
Stone makers, yards and delivery in Gangnam
Korean pet funerals often end with a choice of memorial: an urn placed in a pet columbarium, ashes kept at home, or ashes turned into small, glossy memorial beads, sometimes called memorial stones, that sit in a dish or jar. Others choose jewelry with a trace of ash or a framed paw print. In a Gangnam apartment, compact memorials that fit a shelf or display cabinet are by far the most practical.
Many Korean families mark Chuseok and Seollal with ancestral rites, and some extend a similar care to a pet: a photo on a shelf with a small offering of a favorite treat, or a visit to the columbarium over the holiday. Others prefer something modern and discreet, like memorial beads in a glass jar or a slim pendant worn to work. Neither is more respectful. Choose what fits the way your family remembers.
Delivery is the practical snag in a dense city. A 16 x 8 inch granite marker weighs close to 40 lb, and heavier pieces usually travel by freight, which may mean curbside drop-off only. If you're up several flights of stairs in Gangnam, ask whether the carrier will bring it inside, or choose a lighter river rock or slate plaque that a parcel service can handle.
About 561,000 people live in Gangnam, which makes it the 2nd-largest of the 2 Seoul communities we cover.

Burial, cremation and headstones in South Korea
Because cremation is so common in South Korea (about 92.43%[1] of people are cremated), outdoor memorials here often work alongside an urn indoors. A common pattern is to keep most of the ashes at home, bury a small portion in the garden and set a stone over it. That way the garden has a place to visit and nothing is lost if you move.

Frost, sun and damp: matching stone to Gangnam
One practical test works anywhere, including around Gangnam: walk through the oldest cemetery nearby and look at which headstones still read clearly after fifty years and which have crumbled or blurred. That's a free, local lesson in which stones and lettering styles survive your weather, and a monument maker can usually tell you what each one is made of.

What a pet memorial stone costs in Gangnam
If the memorial is a plaque for a columbarium niche in Gangnam, the niche sets the size, and ongoing fees can outweigh the plaque. One Singapore provider charges SGD 300 for the first year and SGD 180 a year after that[5]. Ask the columbarium for exact plaque dimensions and approved materials before ordering, then compare a local engraver's price.

Home burial, rentals and pet cemeteries in Seoul
Rules about marking a pet's grave are light almost everywhere; the rules that matter are about the grave itself. Depth, distance from water and whether you own the land come up most often. If burial at home isn't allowed or practical, a stone can still mark buried ashes, a scattering spot or simply a favorite corner. Local notes for Seoul follow.
How to choose, order and set a pet stone
- Check the rules before you buy. If the stone is going to a pet cemetery, ask for their marker rules. At home, check any HOA or lease terms.
- Measure the space. Note the width of the bed, how the mower passes and where the stone will be seen from.
- Pick a size and style: a flat flush marker suits grass, a raised one suits a border, an upright one looks like a classic headstone, and a hollow one can keep ashes inside.
- Choose a photo if you want one. Send the full-size original, shot outdoors in natural light, where the face takes up most of the picture.
- Compare a local monument company with an online maker. Ask each for the stone type, lettering depth, lead time and total price.
- Plan delivery and lifting. Heavy granite may come by freight to the curb, so line up a helper or a hand truck.
More ways to remember your pet in Gangnam
Many pet funeral facilities around Seoul include a columbarium with glass-fronted niches where families place an urn with photos and small objects. Families visit on anniversaries and holidays, much as they would for relatives. If you want that, ask about fees and how long a niche is held. If you would rather keep ashes at home, a compact urn or keepsake works well.

Questions people ask
Why does the Gangnam page quote a human cremation rate?
Because it is the best local signal we have. Cremation Society of Great Britain, International Cremation Statistics 2023 (2023) reports about 92.43%[1] of South Korea residents are cremated. There is no official pet equivalent, and inventing one would be worse than quoting a real, clearly labelled number.
Can a provider from a neighbouring town collect from Gangnam?
Usually yes. Seoul is about 5 miles away, Incheon is about 18 miles away and Daejeon is about 82 miles away, all inside a normal collection radius. Get the mileage written into the quote so there is no surprise on the day.
Are there pet cemeteries near Gangnam that accept memorial stones?
Most pet cemeteries allow some kind of marker, but each sets its own rules on size, material and whether upright stones are permitted, and many charge a setting fee. Ask the cemetery for its written rules before ordering. Our pet cemetery marker checklist lists the questions worth asking.
Can I put a pet memorial stone in a rented garden?
Usually yes, as long as it isn't fixed in concrete and you don't bury a body without the landlord's agreement. The simplest approach for renters is a stone you can lift: set on gravel, a garden stone or engraved rock comes out in minutes. A stone with a sealed ashes compartment lets your pet move with you.
Can I add a second pet's name to an existing memorial stone?
Often, yes, if there's room and the stone is suitable. Many monument engravers can cut new lettering on site or in the workshop, and matching the original typeface and depth is easiest if you know who made the stone. If you're ordering now and expect to add a name later, ask for blank space to be left below the first inscription.
How many words fit on a small pet memorial stone?
Less than most people expect. As a rough guide, a 12-inch-wide stone with 1-inch capital letters fits about 14 to 16 characters per line once margins are allowed for, and most small stones take two to four lines. A name, the years and one short line is the classic layout. Our memorial stone planner previews it for you.
