Marking your pet's resting place in Christchurch

Christchurch has an estimated 100,000 dog- or cat-owning households. When a stone is the memorial you want, the local climate, your yard and any HOA or lease rules all shape the right choice.

Stone makers, yards and delivery in Christchurch

The earthquakes changed Christchurch, and many families think carefully about what a lasting memorial means. Portable memorials, such as a small urn, a keepsake box, a paw print impression or jewellery holding a few ashes, can move with you if you change homes. Some people also plant a tree in the garden, a living memorial that grows with the family.

Christchurch is surrounded by places to remember a pet: the Port Hills, the beaches at New Brighton and Sumner, Hagley Park and the Avon River winding through the central city. The Christchurch City Council sets rules for parks and beaches, so check before scattering, and ask the owner before using private land. A calm morning at Sumner, before the easterly picks up, is gentler than a windy afternoon.

Heavier stones don't always come to your door. Freight carriers sometimes deliver to a depot instead, and a granite marker near 40 lb is awkward without a hand truck. When you order for delivery to Christchurch, ask whether the price includes home delivery, whether a liftgate is used and what happens if the stone arrives chipped.

Christchurch's population is around 383,000.

Our estimate

100,000

Christchurch: dog- or cat-owning households, our estimate

How we calculated this

383,000 ÷ 2.7 = 141,852 households; × 31% (dog) + 40% (cat) = 100,000. Multi-pet homes count once.

Our estimate

8,550

dog and cat deaths per year in Christchurch, our estimate

How we calculated this

100,000 dog/cat-owning homes ÷ average lifespan (dog: 12.69 yrs + cat: 11.18 yrs) ≈ 8,550 a year. A floor, not a ceiling.

31%[1]

31% of New Zealand households have a dog, down from 34% in 2020.

12.69 years[2]

US dogs have an average life expectancy at birth of 12.69 years.

40%[3]

40% of New Zealand households have a cat - cats are NZ's most popular pet.

11.18 years[4]

US cats seen at Banfield hospitals have an average life expectancy at birth of 11.18 years.

Burial, cremation and headstones in New Zealand

Cremation now accounts for about 69%[5] of deaths in New Zealand, but burial traditions are still strong. If you grew up with family headstones, you may want the same kind of permanence for your pet: dense granite, deep lettering and a proper base. If your family is more used to ashes and urns, a lighter, movable stone may feel more natural.

We take the New Zealand rate from The Spinoff, citing FDANZ 2023 Funeral Industry Trends Report (2023). It is a human statistic; there is no equivalent pet figure for Christchurch, and we would rather show a real number than invent one.

Which stones survive the weather in Christchurch

We don't have local climate records for Christchurch, so think about your own winters and summers. If the ground freezes for weeks at a time, choose dense granite set on gravel. If summers are fiercely sunny, avoid resin and painted designs. If it's damp and shady, expect moss and choose deep carved lettering.

Pet memorial stone prices for families in Christchurch

If you're in Christchurch, ask a local monumental mason as well as online sellers. Masons who make human headstones often have granite offcuts suitable for a pet marker, and they know which stones handle local sun and salt air. There's no published local price list we trust, so the table shows US figures for comparison.

The Canterbury price table breaks costs down by product; our services page explains what sits behind each line.

Permissions worth checking in Canterbury

Public land is where most families run into limits. Parks, beaches and trails almost never allow a personal stone, and scattering ashes there may need permission or be restricted. The usual answer is to scatter or remember your pet at a public spot, then set the stone somewhere private. What we know for Canterbury is below.

New Zealand gardens are often damp and green, which means moss and lichen grow quickly on memorial stones. Choose deep carved lettering and a spot with some sun, and clean with plain water and a soft brush. Rules on home burial are set by local councils. NZ Post doesn't accept ashes in its parcel network, so if a stone with an ashes compartment is being made elsewhere, plan how the ashes will travel.

What to do first, and what can wait

  1. Decide how much of the ashes belongs with the stone: the whole amount enclosed in a cavity, just a little buried under it, or nothing at all, so the marker only names a spot your pet was fond of.
  2. If the stone will hold ashes, ask the maker for the cavity's volume and compare it with the container the crematory gave you. Our urn size calculator estimates the space you need.
  3. Keep the ashes in a sealed waterproof pouch inside the cavity, because loose ashes draw in moisture and clump.
  4. Place the stone as soon as it arrives if you like. There's no soil to wait on, so families often choose a meaningful date, a birthday or the first mild weekend of the year.
  5. Pick a spot that stays yours, a corner of the patio or a big pot, for instance, if moving house is a possibility.
  6. Write down what's inside the stone and keep the note with your household papers, so nobody later mistakes it for a garden ornament.

Around the stone: plants, benches and small rituals

New Zealand's cremation rate is high, and keeping ashes at home is familiar to many Christchurch families. Outside, Canterbury's hot summers, winter frosts and drying nor'west winds are hard on painted wood and thin metal, while local stone, sealed timber and glazed ceramic last longer. A native plant, such as a kōwhai that flowers yellow each spring, or a harakeke flax, can make a fitting living memorial.

Questions people ask

How many pet owners live in Christchurch?

By our estimate, about 100,000 households in Christchurch have at least one dog or cat, and around 8,550 are lost each year. We calculate this from the city's population of about 383,000, the average household size and national ownership and lifespan figures, so treat it as a floor rather than an exact count.

Is cremation common in New Zealand?

For people, yes: about 69%[5] of New Zealand deaths end in cremation, according to The Spinoff, citing FDANZ 2023 Funeral Industry Trends Report (2023). Nobody publishes the same figure for pets, but in our experience pet choices in Christchurch follow the human pattern closely, so cremation is the default most families here start from.

Are there pet cemeteries near Christchurch that accept memorial stones?

Most pet cemeteries allow some kind of marker, but each sets its own rules on size, material and whether upright stones are permitted, and many charge a setting fee. Ask the cemetery for its written rules before ordering. Our pet cemetery marker checklist lists the questions worth asking.

How do I set a memorial stone so it stays level?

Dig a shallow bed slightly larger than the stone, add 2 to 4 inches of gravel, tamp it firm and level it with a board and a spirit level. Settle the stone on top and check again. For a lawn, set it flush with the grass so a mower can pass over. Heavy upright stones need a proper footing.

How long does it take to make a pet memorial stone?

Small engraved stones can be ready in one to a few weeks, while made-to-order granite takes longer, and a proof you have to approve adds a few days. US makers quote 2–4 weeks[7] for made-to-order granite markers as a guide. Ask makers serving Christchurch for their current lead time before you plan an anniversary around it.

Is it too late to get a stone for a pet who died years ago?

Not at all. Many families order a stone months or years later, once they know where they'll settle or when the grief has softened enough to choose words. If you're not sure exactly where your pet was buried, a stone can mark the general area or a spot in the garden they loved.
