Amsterdam, North Holland
Where a stone can go in Amsterdam
The Netherlands has a strong tradition of planting and gardening, and some Amsterdam families like the idea of a bio urn with bulbs or a small tree, planted in a garden, an allotment or a relative's yard in the countryside. Tulips and daffodils planted in autumn will flower in spring. If you might move, hold back a little of the ashes in a keepsake first.
Amsterdam homes are compact, so many families choose a small memorial: an urn for a windowsill or bookshelf, a pendant holding a trace of ashes, a framed paw print, or a memorial stone for a balcony or houseboat deck planter. Dutch taste leans toward simple, well-designed pieces. Prints and clippings have to be taken before collection, so mention them when you first get in touch.
Some parks departments in large cities run memorial bench or tree dedication programs, and a few will accept a pet's name on the plaque. Rules vary, waiting lists can be long and personal stones are almost never allowed in public parks. If a public spot mattered to your pet, ask Amsterdam's parks office what's permitted, and put the stone itself somewhere private.
With roughly 872,000 residents, Amsterdam is the largest of the 2 North Holland communities we cover.
If you want to compare providers, look at Haarlem (11 miles), Utrecht (21 miles) and The Hague (33 miles). Distance matters because pickup fees and the time until the ashes come back both grow with the drive.

Grave or ashes? The local habit in Netherlands
In Netherlands, where about 68.37%[1] of people are cremated, families are split fairly evenly between the two traditions, and pet owners are too. Whichever you choose, the stone question is much the same: will it sit over a body or over ashes, will it stay or travel with you, and does it need to meet a cemetery's rules?
Cremation Society of Great Britain, International Cremation Statistics 2023 (2023) is where the Netherlands figure comes from. It counts people; we use it because attitudes to cremating a pet in Amsterdam tend to follow attitudes to cremation generally.
Choosing a stone that suits Amsterdam's seasons
We don't have local climate records for Amsterdam, so think about your own winters and summers. If the ground freezes for weeks at a time, choose dense granite set on gravel. If summers are fiercely sunny, avoid resin and painted designs. If it's damp and shady, expect moss and choose deep carved lettering.

Stone, engraving and setting: the real prices
Ordering across borders changes the total in Amsterdam. Within the EU, goods move without customs, but a stone shipped from outside it can attract import VAT, customs fees and a handling charge on delivery. Small engraved natural stones from a US maker cost $38–$115[5], as a reference point; ask European makers to quote a delivered price in euros.

Burial, HOA and cemetery rules in North Holland
Burying a pet on land that belongs to someone else, such as a parent's farm or a friend's garden, needs the owner's clear agreement, and it's wise to note the spot for whoever owns the land next. The stone itself is usually the easy part. Our local notes on burial and scattering in North Holland follow.
Dutch gardens are small and the climate is damp, so pet memorials here tend to be compact: an engraved stone in a flower bed, a slate plaque on a wall or a stone that holds ashes. Moss is the main enemy; deep carved lettering and a spot with some sun help. Home burial rules are set locally, and renters should ask their landlord first. Pet cemeteries set their own marker rules.
How to choose, order and set a pet stone
- Decide how much of the ashes belongs with the stone: the whole amount enclosed in a cavity, just a little buried under it, or nothing at all, so the marker only names a spot your pet was fond of.
- If the stone will hold ashes, ask the maker for the cavity's volume and set it against the size of the bag or box that came back from the crematory. Our urn size calculator gives a rough figure for how much room the ashes take.
- Keep the ashes in a sealed waterproof pouch inside the cavity, because loose ashes draw in moisture and clump.
- Place the stone as soon as it arrives if you like. There's no soil to wait on, so families often choose a meaningful date, a birthday or the first mild weekend of the year.
- Pick a spot that stays yours, such as a patio corner or a large planter, if there's a chance you'll relocate.
- Write down what's inside the stone and file the note with your important documents, so a future owner or relative doesn't treat it as decoration.
Small rituals that keep the stone meaningful
If you are thinking of scattering ashes, many Amsterdammers think of the water, whether a canal, the IJ or the North Sea coast at Zandvoort. Busy canals and beaches are shared spaces, so choose a calm, quiet moment. Setting aside a spoonful in a small urn, a pendant or a keepsake box before any scattering means something stays with you.

Questions people ask
Is cremation common in Netherlands?
For people, yes: about 68.37%[1] of Netherlands deaths end in cremation, according to Cremation Society of Great Britain, International Cremation Statistics 2023 (2023). Nobody publishes the same figure for pets, but in our experience pet choices in Amsterdam follow the human pattern closely, so cremation is the default most families here start from.
Can a provider from a neighbouring town collect from Amsterdam?
Usually yes. Haarlem is about 11 miles away, Utrecht is about 21 miles away and The Hague is about 33 miles away, all inside a normal collection radius. Get the mileage written into the quote so there is no surprise on the day.
Can a memorial stone hold my pet's ashes?
Yes. Some stones have a hollow underside sealed with a plug, or a cavity behind a screwed plate. Check the stated capacity: ashes typically weigh about 3-5% of body weight[7], so a large dog may need more space than most garden stones offer. A waterproof inner bag protects the ashes from damp.
Can I have my pet's photo etched onto a stone?
Yes. Makers use a laser on polished black granite to create a gray-scale portrait. Results depend on the picture: send the original file, taken in daylight, with your pet looking toward the camera. Dark pets on dark backgrounds and pale pets on pale ones lose their outline, so ask for background removal and approve a proof.
What do people usually engrave on a pet memorial stone?
Most choose the pet's name and years, plus one short line: a nickname, a place they loved or a phrase the family always said. A paw print or small outline is a popular alternative to words. Read the wording out loud, check the spelling with someone else and keep it short enough to read from the path.
What happens to my pet's memorial stone if I move out of Amsterdam?
If it sits on a gravel bed, lift it and take it with you; that's why many families avoid concrete. If ashes are inside the stone, they travel too. If your pet is buried beneath it, many owners take the stone and plant something in its place, and some tell the new owners what the spot means.
