Florence, Tuscany
Stone makers, yards and delivery in Florence
Florence has centuries of craftsmanship, from the goldsmiths of the Ponte Vecchio to marble from nearby Carrara and terracotta from Impruneta. Many families choose a memorial with that same care: a piece of jewellery holding a few ashes, a small marble or stone urn, a terracotta planter, or a paw print impression. Handmade pieces often feel more personal than mass-produced ones.
In Florence, burial remains the traditional choice for people, and on 2 November many families still carry chrysanthemums to relatives' graves. Some now remember a pet in the same season, with flowers beside the ashes or a candle on the windowsill. Having something physical to gather around, whether an urn, a small marble plaque or a keepsake, gives those moments a natural focus.
Some families near Florence ask a local landscape yard for a natural boulder and then have it engraved. It can be a beautiful, very personal memorial, but check that the engraver will work on that type of rock, because soft or crumbly stone won't hold fine letters. A dense, smooth face gives the cleanest result. Families in nearby Siena often face the same choice.
With roughly 382,000 residents, Florence is the largest of the 2 Tuscany communities we cover. Bologna, roughly 50 miles off, is the closest larger centre, and a share of the providers who cover Florence run from there.
The closest communities we cover are Siena (31 miles), Bologna (50 miles) and Portofino (108 miles). Providers serving those towns often travel to Florence too, so it can be worth asking them for a quote.

Burial, cremation and headstones in Italy
In Italy, where about 38.16%[1] of people are cremated, burial remains the usual choice for people, and plenty of pet owners follow suit. A whole-body pet grave needs a larger stone than buried ashes, and the soil takes longer to settle, so wait a month or two before setting a heavy marker and use a gravel base to keep it level.
For the Italy figure we rely on Cremation Society of Great Britain, International Cremation Statistics 2023 (2023). Read it as a picture of local custom around death and remembrance in Florence rather than as pet data.
Florence weather and your pet's stone
Weather decides how a stone ages more than price does. Porous stone soaks up water; if that water freezes, the surface flakes. Strong sun fades paint and resin. Constant damp grows moss. Whatever the conditions around Florence, dense granite with deep sandblasted letters is the most forgiving choice.

Budgeting for the stone, lettering and delivery
In Florence, as in much of Europe, the local stonemason who makes human headstones is often the best place to ask about a pet marker. Many will cut a small stone from leftover material. Ask for a written price covering the stone, lettering, any image and delivery, and check whether a pet cemetery near you limits marker sizes.

Rules to check before placing a stone in Tuscany
Some human cemeteries now have a pet section or accept a pet's ashes in a family plot, while many still refuse animals entirely. If you'd like your pet near relatives, ask the cemetery office for its written policy on pets, ashes and marker sizes before buying anything. Below is what we know about pet burial and scattering in Tuscany.
In Italy, local marmisti who make headstones often engrave small memorials for pets, and marble is a traditional choice. Marble is soft and can etch and stain outdoors, especially in rain or frost, so for a garden in the cooler north consider granite. Home burial rules depend on the region and municipality, and pet cemeteries set their own rules on markers.
A simple plan for your pet's memorial stone
- Give yourself time. A stone has no deadline, and a fresh grave settles for a month or two before it can take a heavy marker.
- Talk about the words with your family. Children often have the best ideas, and saying the line out loud shows whether it fits.
- Decide how permanent it should be. Set on gravel, a stone lifts out if you move; set in concrete, it usually stays.
- Order from a maker who sends a proof, then hold your phone out at full reach to view it, which is close to the distance you'll read it from outdoors.
- Choose an installation day with soft ground and good weather, then scrape out a shallow hollow deep enough to take a 3 to 4 inch layer of gravel.
- Place the stone together. Turning it into a brief ritual helps many families: someone tells a memory, a well-loved toy goes beside it, or a plant goes in.
Small rituals that keep the stone meaningful
The hills around Florence, from Fiesole to the vineyards toward Chianti, are places many families connect with Sunday outings. Scattering ashes in the countryside is a personal choice, but rules vary by comune and landowners must agree, so check first. Many Florentine families keep some ashes at home in a small urn or pendant even after scattering, so that there is always something to hold.

Questions people ask
Is cremation common in Italy?
For people, yes: about 38.16%[1] of Italy deaths end in cremation, according to Cremation Society of Great Britain, International Cremation Statistics 2023 (2023). Nobody publishes the same figure for pets, but in our experience pet choices in Florence follow the human pattern closely, so cremation is the default most families here start from.
Where are the providers that serve Florence actually based?
Some are local, and some run from Bologna, about 50 miles away. That is normal for a city this size. What matters is the collection time they quote for Florence and whether the drive is priced into the total, so ask both up front.
Which nearby towns can I compare with Florence?
The closest communities we cover are Siena (about 31 miles), Bologna (about 50 miles) and Portofino (about 108 miles). Providers based in those places often serve Florence too. Ask each one for a written total that includes collection, so the distance is priced in.
How many words fit on a small pet memorial stone?
Less than most people expect. As a rough guide, a 12-inch-wide stone with 1-inch capital letters fits about 14 to 16 characters per line once margins are allowed for, and most small stones take two to four lines. A name, the years and one short line is the classic layout. Our memorial stone planner previews it for you.
How heavy is a granite pet grave marker?
Granite weighs roughly 165 to 170 lb per cubic foot, so a 12 x 6 inch marker 2 inches thick weighs about 14 lb, and a 16 x 8 inch marker 3 inches thick is close to 40 lb. Upright headstones with a base can weigh well over 100 lb. Heavier pieces usually ship by freight and may be delivered to the curb only.
Can I have my pet's photo etched onto a stone?
Yes. Makers use a laser on polished black granite to create a gray-scale portrait. Results depend on the picture: send the original file, taken in daylight, with your pet looking toward the camera. Dark pets on dark backgrounds and pale pets on pale ones lose their outline, so ask for background removal and approve a proof.
