Burial, cremation and headstones in Italy
Whole-body burial at home is common in Italy, where cremation is chosen for a minority, roughly 38.16%[1], of the people who die. A dog's grave is longer than it is wide, so decide which end is the head and set the stone there, facing the path you'll approach from. For a small pet, a single flat stone laid over the whole grave also works.

Rules to check before placing a stone in Sicily
Rented homes, condos and strata properties need a different plan. You usually can't bury a pet in shared grounds, and anything fixed in place may have to be removed when you leave. A stone with a sealed ashes compartment, or a heavy engraved rock on a patio, gives you a memorial without breaking the lease. Here's the local picture for Sicily.
In Italy, local marmisti who make headstones often engrave small memorials for pets, and marble is a traditional choice. Marble is soft and can etch and stain outdoors, especially in rain or frost, so for a garden in the cooler north consider granite. Home burial rules depend on the region and municipality, and pet cemeteries set their own rules on markers.
A simple plan for your pet's memorial stone
- Let your child help choose the spot. Somewhere they can reach alone, or see from a bedroom window, often matters more to them than to adults.
- Start with a stone they decorate themselves. Outdoor paint pens on a smooth river rock give small hands something to do in the first raw days.
- Ask them for one word or line to include. Children's phrases are often the ones a family treasures most years later.
- Show them the proof before you approve it, and let them check the spelling of the pet's name letter by letter.
- Keep the homemade stone next to the carved marker, or move it inside onto a shelf after the permanent one goes in.

How do Italy attitudes to cremation compare?
Cremation Society of Great Britain, International Cremation Statistics 2023 (2023) puts the Italy human cremation rate at about 38.16%[1]. Can I add a second pet's name to an existing memorial stone?
Often, yes, if there's room and the stone is suitable. Many monument engravers can cut new lettering on site or in the workshop, and matching the original typeface and depth is easiest if you know who made the stone. If you're ordering now and expect to add a name later, ask for blank space to be left below the first inscription.
Is it too late to get a stone for a pet who died years ago?
Not at all. Many families order a stone months or years later, once they know where they'll settle or when the grief has softened enough to choose words. If you're not sure exactly where your pet was buried, a stone can mark the general area or a spot in the garden they loved.
Is a personal memorial allowed in a park near Palermo?
Almost never. Parks departments generally don't allow personal stones, and scattering ashes may need permission. Some parks offices sell dedicated benches or trees with a small plaque, sometimes including a pet's name, though waiting lists can be long.
