Grave or ashes? The local habit in Germany
In places where cremation is as common as it is in Germany, where about 76.0%[1] of people are cremated, ashes give families more freedom. A stone doesn't have to sit over a grave. It can mark a scattering spot, hold a portion of ashes in a cavity or stand in a patio planter, and it can move with you when you do.

Some human cemeteries now have a pet section or accept a pet's ashes in a family plot, while many still refuse animals entirely. If you'd like your pet near relatives, ask the cemetery office for its written policy on pets, ashes and marker sizes before buying anything. Germany has roughly 120 pet cemeteries, and a grave in one typically costs about €150 to €250[5]. Graves are often rented for a set period, so ask what happens to the stone when the term ends. Home burial rules differ between federal states and municipalities, usually with minimum soil cover and distance from water. A step-by-step plan for your situation
- Note exactly where the grave is today. Count the steps from two things that won't move, like a post and the porch step, and photograph it before raking evens out the ground.
- Cover the fresh soil with something heavy and flat, a slab or an overturned pot will do, to stop anything from digging there while the ground firms.
- Leave the permanent stone for a few weeks. Shock makes every choice feel urgent, and this one can wait until you're sleeping again.
- Top up the soil as it sinks. A new grave often drops a few inches; add soil, firm it with your foot and wait for it to stop moving.
- Measure the settled patch and choose a stone wide enough to cover most of it, which also discourages anything from digging there later.
- Set the finished stone on gravel over the firmed ground, and once a good downpour has been through, put a level on it a second time.

The Stadtwald south of the Main and the riverside paths along both banks are familiar ground for many Frankfurt pet owners. Why does the Frankfurt page quote a human cremation rate?
Because it is the best local signal we have. Cremation Society of Great Britain, International Cremation Statistics 2023 (2023) reports about 76.0%[1] of Germany residents are cremated. There is no official pet equivalent, and inventing one would be worse than quoting a real, clearly labelled number.
Can a provider from a neighbouring town collect from Frankfurt?
Usually yes. Wiesbaden is about 20 miles away, Mainz is about 21 miles away and Mannheim is about 44 miles away, all inside a normal collection radius. Get the mileage written into the quote so there is no surprise on the day.
Should I use a local stonemason or an online engraver in Frankfurt?

Less than most people expect. As a rough guide, a 12-inch-wide stone with 1-inch capital letters fits about 14 to 16 characters per line once margins are allowed for, and most small stones take two to four lines. How do I set a memorial stone so it stays level?
Dig a shallow bed slightly larger than the stone, add 2 to 4 inches of gravel, tamp it firm and level it with a board and a spirit level. Settle the stone on top and check again. For a lawn, set it flush with the grass so a mower can pass over. Heavy upright stones need a proper footing.
