Choosing a pet memorial stone in Bordeaux
An échoppe garden in Bordeaux has room for a small memorial stone or a potted olive or fig planted with ashes, while in a center apartment a compact urn or pendant usually fits better. Some families choose an urn in local oak, a nod to the wine barrels made in the region. Knowing where it will sit makes the choice of style much easier.
On All Saints' Day, the first of November, French families traditionally carry chrysanthemums to relatives' graves, and some in Bordeaux now remember a pet on the same day with a candle beside the urn or flowers by a garden stone. If you want a paw print or a lock of fur for that memorial, ask before the cremation takes place.
Many vets and pet crematories around Bordeaux can order a memorial stone for you from a catalog, which is convenient if you're already collecting ashes. It isn't always the cheapest route, and the range can be narrow. Ask to see the material and the lettering method, then compare with a local monument shop or an online maker such as those in our services guide.

Burial, cremation and headstones in France
In France, where about 44.91%[1] of people are cremated, burial remains the usual choice for people, and plenty of pet owners follow suit. A whole-body pet grave needs a larger stone than buried ashes, and the soil takes longer to settle, so wait a month or two before setting a heavy marker and use a gravel base to keep it level.
We take the France rate from ICI (France Bleu), citing the Fédération française de crémation (2023). It is a human statistic; there is no equivalent pet figure for Bordeaux, and we would rather show a real number than invent one.
Frost, sun and damp: matching stone to Bordeaux
One practical test works anywhere, including around Bordeaux: walk through the oldest cemetery nearby and look at which headstones still read clearly after fifty years and which have crumbled or blurred. That's a free, local lesson in which stones and lettering styles survive your weather, and a monument maker can usually tell you what each one is made of.

What drives the price of a pet memorial stone
Ordering across borders changes the total in Bordeaux. Within the EU, goods move without customs, but a stone shipped from outside it can attract import VAT, customs fees and a handling charge on delivery. Small engraved natural stones from a US maker cost $38–$115[5], as a reference point; ask European makers to quote a delivered price in euros.

Where a pet stone can go in Nouvelle-Aquitaine
Three sets of rules decide where a pet memorial stone can go in Nouvelle-Aquitaine: the public rules on burying a pet, private rules from your homeowners' association, landlord or strata, and the marker rules of any pet cemetery. A stone over buried ashes or in a planter usually raises no issue at all; a whole-body grave and an upright headstone raise the most questions.
In France, local monument makers (marbriers) who make human headstones will often engrave a small plaque or stone for a pet. Home burial rules depend on where you live and the size of the animal, so ask your mairie before digging. Pet cemeteries exist in many regions and set their own marker rules. In the colder east and in the mountains, choose granite for outdoor stones.
How to choose, order and set a pet stone
- Photograph the spot now. Makers can recommend proportions far better when they can see the bed or grave the stone is going into.
- Set a rough budget. Count the marker itself, the engraving, shipping and whatever a cemetery charges to install it; our memorial budget planner totals these for you.
- Choose the material. Let your local freeze and heat decide, not how it looks in the brochure.
- Draft two or three wording options and sleep on them for a few days, then go with the one that hasn't worn thin.
- Send the details for quotes. Size, material, wording, photo and delivery address are all a maker needs.
- Approve the proof and arrange delivery, then set the stone on drained gravel so it stays level for years.
Keeping the memory close
The quays along the Garonne, the Jardin Public, the Arcachon Basin and the Dune du Pilat are places many Bordeaux families shared with their animals. Beaches, forests and public gardens each have rules about ashes, so check with the local mairie first. Keeping most of the ashes at home and taking a pinch to the coast is a common compromise.

Questions people ask
Is cremation common in France?
For people, yes: about 44.91%[1] of France deaths end in cremation, according to ICI (France Bleu), citing the Fédération française de crémation (2023). Nobody publishes the same figure for pets, but in our experience pet choices in Bordeaux follow the human pattern closely, so cremation is the default most families here start from.
Can a memorial stone hold my pet's ashes?
Yes. Some stones have a hollow underside sealed with a plug, or a cavity behind a screwed plate. Check the stated capacity: ashes typically weigh about 3-5% of body weight[7], so a large dog may need more space than most garden stones offer. A waterproof inner bag protects the ashes from damp.
Can I add a second pet's name to an existing memorial stone?
Often, yes, if there's room and the stone is suitable. Many monument engravers can cut new lettering on site or in the workshop, and matching the original typeface and depth is easiest if you know who made the stone. If you're ordering now and expect to add a name later, ask for blank space to be left below the first inscription.
How do I set a memorial stone so it stays level?
Dig a shallow bed slightly larger than the stone, add 2 to 4 inches of gravel, tamp it firm and level it with a board and a spirit level. Settle the stone on top and check again. For a lawn, set it flush with the grass so a mower can pass over. Heavy upright stones need a proper footing.
Is a memorial stone a good idea if my pet was cremated?
Yes, and cremation gives you more freedom. The stone can sit over a small portion of buried ashes, hold ashes in a sealed compartment or simply mark a favorite spot, and there's no grave to settle, so you can set it straight away. You can also keep most of the ashes indoors and bury just a spoonful.
What happens to my pet's memorial stone if I move out of Bordeaux?
If it sits on a gravel bed, lift it and take it with you; that's why many families avoid concrete. If ashes are inside the stone, they travel too. If your pet is buried beneath it, many owners take the stone and plant something in its place, and some tell the new owners what the spot means.
