Prague, Czech Republic
Local makers and practical limits in Prague
With the Czech Republic's human cremation rate above 80 percent, keeping ashes at home or placing them somewhere personal feels natural to many Prague families. For a pet, that might mean an urn on a shelf, a piece of jewellery with a little ash, a framed paw print, or a tree planted at the family cottage. Ask the provider about options before the cremation so portions can be set aside.
Dušičky, All Souls' Day on 2 November, is when Czech families light candles on graves, and many quietly light one for a pet too. A candle beside a photo at home, a visit to a pet cemetery on the city's edge, or a moment at the cottage garden can all be part of it. There is no single right memorial; the yearly ritual is often what matters most.
Most large metros have at least one established pet cemetery within driving distance, and each one sets its own marker rules. Some take only flush granite of a fixed size so their mowers can pass; others allow upright headstones for an extra setting fee. If your pet is buried or will be buried in a cemetery near Prague, get the rules sheet before you order anything.

How Czech Republic remembers its dead, and its pets
Cremation is the norm in Czech Republic: about 85.64%[1] of people who die there are cremated. Pet owners tend to follow the same pattern, which shapes the kind of stone families choose. Here, a memorial stone often marks buried ashes in a flower bed or sits beside an urn, rather than covering a full grave, so smaller stones and ones with a sealed ashes compartment are popular.
The Czech Republic figure comes from Cremation Society of Great Britain, International Cremation Statistics 2023 (2023). It describes people, not pets, so read it as a sign of local attitudes rather than a pet statistic.
When to install, and what the seasons do to stone
Weather decides how a stone ages more than price does. Porous stone soaks up water; if that water freezes, the surface flakes. Strong sun fades paint and resin. Constant damp grows moss. Whatever the conditions around Prague, dense granite with deep sandblasted letters is the most forgiving choice.

How much to budget for a pet stone
Ordering across borders changes the total in Prague. Within the EU, goods move without customs, but a stone shipped from outside it can attract import VAT, customs fees and a handling charge on delivery. Small engraved natural stones from a US maker cost $38–$115[5], as a reference point; ask European makers to quote a delivered price in euros.

Burial, HOA and cemetery rules in Czech Republic
Three sets of rules decide where a pet memorial stone can go in Czech Republic: the public rules on burying a pet, private rules from your homeowners' association, landlord or strata, and the marker rules of any pet cemetery. A stone over buried ashes or in a planter usually raises no issue at all; a whole-body grave and an upright headstone raise the most questions.
From first idea to a stone in the ground
- Let your child help choose the spot. A place they can get to by themselves, or look at from their bedroom, tends to mean more to a child than any adult would guess.
- Start with a stone they decorate themselves. Outdoor paint pens on a smooth river rock give small hands something to do in the first raw days.
- Ask them for one word or line to include. Years on, it's usually the child's own phrase that the whole family holds dearest.
- Show them the proof before you approve it, and give them the job of reading the pet's name aloud one letter at a time.
- Keep the homemade stone beside the engraved one, or bring it indoors to a shelf once the permanent marker is set.
- Give each child a job on the day: one carries the marker, one arranges pebbles around the edge, one waters whatever you plant beside it. Our guides have more ideas.
Small rituals that keep the stone meaningful
The Vltava, Petřín Hill and the forests around Prague are places many families connect with, and some want a memorial that brings them to mind: a stone engraved with a river motif, a photo from a favourite spot, or a small portion of ashes scattered somewhere quiet. Check what rules apply before scattering in a public place, and keep some back if you are unsure.

Questions people ask
Why does the Prague page quote a human cremation rate?
Because it is the best local signal we have. Cremation Society of Great Britain, International Cremation Statistics 2023 (2023) reports about 85.64%[1] of Czech Republic residents are cremated. There is no official pet equivalent, and inventing one would be worse than quoting a real, clearly labelled number.
What should a written quote for a pet memorial stone include?
The exact stone type and thickness, the size, the lettering method and depth, the number of characters or lines included, any image, the proof process, delivery to your door and all taxes and import charges. If you're ordering from abroad, ask for the total in local currency. A quote missing delivery or taxes isn't really comparable.
Can a stone ship to Prague from the US?
Often, but check the total. Heavy granite ships by freight, and cross-border shipping, import duties and local taxes can add a lot. A local monument mason may cost more for the stone but less once delivery is included, and you can see the proof in person. Small engraved river rocks ship far more cheaply.
Can I have my pet's photo etched onto a stone?
Yes. Makers use a laser on polished black granite to create a gray-scale portrait. Results depend on the picture: send the original file, taken in daylight, with your pet looking toward the camera. Dark pets on dark backgrounds and pale pets on pale ones lose their outline, so ask for background removal and approve a proof.
Should I use a local stonemason or an online engraver in Prague?
Both work. A local monument company lets you see the stone and lettering in person and may handle delivery and setting, which matters for heavy granite and upright stones. Online makers are often cheaper for small stones and include a few lines of text. Whichever you choose, insist on a written proof before cutting.
What happens to my pet's memorial stone if I move out of Prague?
If it sits on a gravel bed, lift it and take it with you; that's why many families avoid concrete. If ashes are inside the stone, they travel too. If your pet is buried beneath it, many owners take the stone and plant something in its place, and some tell the new owners what the spot means.
