Pet Memorial Stones in Shanghai

Shanghai, China

Pet Memorial Stones in Shanghai: what to know

Monument companies, the businesses that make human headstones, are spread across Shanghai, and many will take on a small pet marker. They're often the best source for heavy granite and upright stones because they deliver and set them. For smaller engraved stones, online makers ship almost anywhere in Shanghai, often with lettering included.

Pet memorial stones in Shanghai work much the same way everywhere, but the right stone changes with where you live. Winters, summer sun, soil and local rules all shape what lasts and where it can go. In the bigger cities, several monument companies and online makers compete for your order; in smaller towns, you may need to look further afield or order online.

Burial, cremation and headstones in Shanghai

With about 50%[1] of people in Shanghai cremated, local monument companies still make plenty of headstones, which is good news for pet owners. Their skills and equipment are right there, and many will take on a small pet marker. Ask one that makes human memorials locally; they'll know which granites cope with the local winters.

The cremation figure for Shanghai comes from Wikipedia: Cremation by country (2019). It counts people, not pets, so treat it as a guide to local attitudes rather than a pet statistic.

Stone, engraving and setting: the real prices

In much of Asia, a pet's ashes more often go to a columbarium or a home shrine than under a garden stone, and published prices reflect that. In Singapore, for example, one provider's columbarium niches start at SGD 300 for the first year with SGD 180 yearly renewal[2]. The table sets that beside US stone prices for scale.

Rules on burying animals can be strict in parts of Asia; in Japan, for example, burying animals in public places such as parks is illegal[3]. That's why many families in Shanghai choose a private memorial park or a stone at home rather than a grave. We haven't found local stone price surveys, so the table shows US figures for comparison.

Rules to check before placing a stone in Shanghai

Burying a pet on land that belongs to someone else, such as a parent's farm or a friend's garden, needs the owner's clear agreement, and it's wise to note the spot for whoever owns the land next. The stone itself is usually the easy part. Our local notes on burial and scattering in Shanghai follow.

What to do first, and what can wait

  1. Work out what the stone is marking: a grave, buried ashes, a scattering spot or simply a place your pet loved.
  2. If ashes will go inside the stone, check the cavity size against your pet's ashes with our urn size calculator.
  3. Choose dense stone and carved lettering. Painted or printed designs look bright on day one but fade outdoors.
  4. Keep the wording short. Most small stones fit two or three lines of 14 to 16 capital letters.
  5. Get written quotes from makers who serve your area, and ask what happens if the stone arrives damaged.
  6. Sign off the proof, and think about placement: a bed of gravel underneath, a spirit level on top, and enough distance from trees that roots won't tilt it.

Remembering your pet beside the stone

If your pet rests in a pet cemetery, visiting on anniversaries can become part of your year. Ask the cemetery what you're allowed to leave: many limit decorations, glass and anything that gets in the way of mowing. A small potted plant you take home again is usually welcome, and it gives you something to tend.

The services page compares what each option includes, the planning tools turn your animal's details into figures, and the poll results show what other families chose. All locations lists every region we cover.

Questions people ask

Which stone lasts longest outdoors in Shanghai?

Granite, almost everywhere. It barely absorbs water, so it survives freeze-thaw, and carved lettering doesn't fade in sun. Slate and river rock last well in mild, dry places; sandstone, concrete and cast resin are the most likely to crack, soften or fade. Deep sandblasted lettering matters as much as the stone.

Is a local stonemason or an online maker better in Shanghai?

It depends on the stone. For heavy granite and upright headstones, a local monument company that delivers and sets the stone is often worth it. For small engraved stones and river rocks, online makers are usually cheaper and include lettering. Whichever you choose, approve a written proof before anything is cut.

How many communities do you cover in Shanghai?

We currently have local pet memorial stone guides for 1 communities in Shanghai, including Shanghai. Each page covers local weather, which stones suit it, published prices, burial and cemetery notes, and how delivery usually works there.

When is the best time of year to set a pet memorial stone in Shanghai?

Late spring and early fall are easiest in most places: the ground is soft enough to dig and the weather is comfortable. In freezing areas, wait until the ground thaws. A fresh grave also needs a month or two to settle before a heavy stone goes on it, so a temporary marker is a good first step.

Can I bury my pet at home in Shanghai and mark it with a stone?

Often yes, with conditions such as burial depth, distance from wells and water, and whether you own the land. Cities, homeowners' associations and landlords can be stricter than the wider rules. The stone itself rarely needs permission; the burial is what's regulated. Each city page lists the local notes we have.

How do heavy granite stones get delivered to rural parts of Shanghai?

Large granite pieces tend to go by truck freight, and the driver may leave them at the roadside or ask you to collect from a depot. Before paying, ask who unloads it, how far it will be carried and who pays if a corner is chipped in transit. Some local monument makers deliver and set stones on their regular runs.
