Choosing a pet memorial stone in Beijing
Some Beijing owners like a memorial that travels with them: a pendant or bracelet holding a small amount of ash, or a stone carved with a name. Others prefer to plant something on a balcony, perhaps with a biodegradable urn in a large pot. If more than one family member wants to keep some ashes, ask whether the provider can divide them before they're returned.
In China about half of human deaths end in cremation, and in Beijing it's the normal choice, so keeping a pet's ashes feels natural to many families. What matters most is space: in a compound apartment, a small urn on a shelf with a photo, a keepsake with a little ash, or a paw print often fits better than something large. Pick a memorial you'll be happy to see every day.
Most large metros have at least one established pet cemetery within driving distance, and each one sets its own marker rules. Some take only flush granite of a fixed size so their mowers can pass; others allow upright headstones for an extra setting fee. If your pet is buried or will be buried in a cemetery near Beijing, get the rules sheet before you order anything.
Beijing's population is around 21,540,000.

Burial, cremation and headstones in China
Even with cremation at roughly 50%[1] of human deaths in China, local churchyards and cemeteries are full of short, formal inscriptions. Some families like that tone for a pet: a full name and two dates. Others want the nickname, the squeaky toy and a joke only the family gets. Both are right, and the stone is small enough to say only one thing well.
That China rate is a human one, published by Wikipedia: Cremation by country (2019). We quote it for Beijing only as a pointer to how families here already think about cremation.
When to install, and what the seasons do to stone
Weather decides how a stone ages more than price does. Porous stone soaks up water; if that water freezes, the surface flakes. Strong sun fades paint and resin. Constant damp grows moss. Whatever the conditions around Beijing, dense granite with deep sandblasted letters is the most forgiving choice.

What drives the price of a pet memorial stone
Garden space is limited in many Asian cities, so a memorial stone for a pet in Beijing is often small: an engraved plaque for a balcony planter, a stone for a family garden elsewhere or a marker at a pet memorial park. Ask any maker for a written price in local currency that includes lettering and delivery.

What China allows for pet graves and markers
Burying a pet on land that belongs to someone else, such as a parent's farm or a friend's garden, needs the owner's clear agreement, and it's wise to note the spot for whoever owns the land next. The stone itself is usually the easy part. Our local notes on burial and scattering in China follow.
From first idea to a stone in the ground
- Give yourself time. A stone has no deadline, and a fresh grave settles for a month or two before it can take a heavy marker.
- Talk about the words with your family. Children often have the best ideas, and saying the line out loud shows whether it fits.
- Decide how permanent it should be. A marker resting on gravel can come with you to a new home; one bedded in concrete is there for good.
- Order from a maker who sends a proof, then hold your phone out at full reach to view it, which is close to the distance you'll read it from outdoors.
- Choose an installation day with soft ground and good weather, and dig a shallow bed for 3 to 4 inches of gravel.
- Place the stone together. Many families make it a small ceremony, with a story, a favorite toy or a plant.
Keeping the memory close
Qingming, in early April, is when many Beijing families sweep graves and remember relatives, and some quietly remember their pets at the same time, with flowers, a photo or a candle at home. If you'd like a place outside, ask about pet memorial parks near the city rather than burying ashes in public parks, and check the rules for any location before you scatter or plant anything.

Questions people ask
Is cremation common in China?
For people, yes: about 50%[1] of China deaths end in cremation, according to Wikipedia: Cremation by country (2019). Nobody publishes the same figure for pets, but in our experience pet choices in Beijing follow the human pattern closely, so cremation is the default most families here start from.
Is it too late to get a stone for a pet who died years ago?
Not at all. Many families order a stone months or years later, once they know where they'll settle or when the grief has softened enough to choose words. If you're not sure exactly where your pet was buried, a stone can mark the general area or a spot in the garden they loved.
How long does it take to make a pet memorial stone?
Small engraved stones can be ready in one to a few weeks, while made-to-order granite takes longer, and a proof you have to approve adds a few days. US makers quote 2–4 weeks[4] for made-to-order granite markers as a guide. Ask makers serving Beijing for their current lead time before you plan an anniversary around it.
Can a memorial stone hold my pet's ashes?
Yes. Some stones have a hollow underside sealed with a plug, or a cavity behind a screwed plate. Check the stated capacity: ashes typically weigh about 3-5% of body weight[6], so a large dog may need more space than most garden stones offer. A waterproof inner bag protects the ashes from damp.
Can I put a pet memorial stone in a rented garden?
Usually yes, as long as it isn't fixed in concrete and you don't bury a body without the landlord's agreement. The simplest approach for renters is a stone you can lift: set on gravel, a garden stone or engraved rock comes out in minutes. A stone with a sealed ashes compartment lets your pet move with you.
How many words fit on a small pet memorial stone?
Less than most people expect. As a rough guide, a 12-inch-wide stone with 1-inch capital letters fits about 14 to 16 characters per line once margins are allowed for, and most small stones take two to four lines. A name, the years and one short line is the classic layout. Our memorial stone planner previews it for you.
