Rio de Janeiro, Brazil
Stone makers, yards and delivery in Rio de Janeiro
Brazilians mark Finados, the Day of the Dead on November 2, by visiting graves and remembering family, and some pet owners like to light a candle or set out flowers for their animal on that day too. A memorial doesn't have to be permanent to matter. A plant on the balcony, a stone from a favorite beach, or a keepsake worn every day can all hold a memory.
In Brazil only about 9% of people are cremated, so many Rio families are deciding for the first time what to do with ashes. There's no single right answer. Some keep them at home in a simple container, some choose a keepsake that holds a small amount, and others prefer a paw print or a photo and let the ashes go somewhere meaningful. Take your time; the remains can wait until you're ready.
One advantage of a large metro is that you can often see a stone that has aged. Ask engravers in Rio de Janeiro whether they have a pet marker or sample that has sat outdoors for several years. Lettering depth, how the paint fill has weathered and how the polish has held up tell you more than any catalog photo.

How local customs shape pet memorials
In Brazil, where about 9%[1] of people are cremated, burial remains the usual choice for people, and plenty of pet owners follow suit. A whole-body pet grave needs a larger stone than buried ashes, and the soil takes longer to settle, so wait a month or two before setting a heavy marker and use a gravel base to keep it level.
That Brazil rate is a human one, published by Exame, citing Sincep (2024). We quote it for Rio de Janeiro only as a pointer to how families here already think about cremation.
Rio de Janeiro weather and your pet's stone
Think about the seasons you actually get around Rio de Janeiro. Install when the ground is soft and the weather is comfortable, check any ashes compartment seal before the wettest or coldest part of the year, and give the stone a gentle clean with plain water once or twice a year.

Stone, engraving and setting: the real prices
In Rio de Janeiro, heavy granite may need to be shipped from elsewhere, and freight can cost as much as the stone. A local mason working with regional stone, or a smaller engraved natural rock, is often better value. The table shows published US prices so you can tell whether a quote is reasonable.

Burial, HOA and cemetery rules in Brazil
If you own your home, you can usually place a garden stone wherever you like; the stricter rules concern burying a body, not marking a spot. If you rent, ask your landlord before burying anything or setting a stone in concrete, and choose a stone you can lift and take with you. Below are the burial and scattering notes we have for Brazil.
What to do first, and what can wait
- Work out what the stone is marking: a grave, buried ashes, a scattering spot or simply a place your pet loved.
- If ashes will go inside the stone, run the cavity's dimensions through our urn size calculator to be sure everything will fit.
- Choose dense stone and carved lettering. Anything painted or printed onto the surface looks sharp when new and dulls after a few seasons of sun and rain.
- Keep the wording short. Most small stones fit two or three lines of 14 to 16 capital letters.
- Get written quotes from a few makers who deliver where you live, and find out how they handle a stone that's chipped in transit.
- Sign off the proof, then plan the setting: gravel bed, level, and a gap from tree trunks so roots don't lift it.
Keeping the memory close
Space is tight in most Rio apartments, so a memorial here often needs to be small: a shelf with a photo and a little container, a piece of jewelry, or a framed paw print. If your pet loved the sea or the forest, you might keep a small share at home and scatter the rest. Ask your provider whether they can divide the ashes so different family members can each keep something.

Questions people ask
Is cremation common in Brazil?
For people, yes: about 9%[1] of Brazil deaths end in cremation, according to Exame, citing Sincep (2024). Nobody publishes the same figure for pets, but in our experience pet choices in Rio de Janeiro follow the human pattern closely, so cremation is the default most families here start from.
Can a memorial stone hold my pet's ashes?
Yes. Some stones have a hollow underside sealed with a plug, or a cavity behind a screwed plate. Check the stated capacity: ashes typically weigh about 3-5% of body weight[5], so a large dog may need more space than most garden stones offer. A waterproof inner bag protects the ashes from damp.
Is a personal memorial allowed in a park near Rio de Janeiro?
Almost never. Parks departments generally don't allow personal stones, and scattering ashes may need permission. Some parks offices sell dedicated benches or trees with a small plaque, sometimes including a pet's name, though waiting lists can be long. The usual approach is to honor the park in the wording and set the stone somewhere private.
What should a written quote for a pet memorial stone include?
The exact stone type and thickness, the size, the lettering method and depth, the number of characters or lines included, any image, the proof process, delivery to your door and all taxes and import charges. If you're ordering from abroad, ask for the total in local currency. A quote missing delivery or taxes isn't really comparable.
How heavy is a granite pet grave marker?
Granite weighs roughly 165 to 170 lb per cubic foot, so a 12 x 6 inch marker 2 inches thick weighs about 14 lb, and a 16 x 8 inch marker 3 inches thick is close to 40 lb. Upright headstones with a base can weigh well over 100 lb. Heavier pieces usually ship by freight and may be delivered to the curb only.
Should I use a local stonemason or an online engraver in Rio de Janeiro?
Both work. A local monument company lets you see the stone and lettering in person and may handle delivery and setting, which matters for heavy granite and upright stones. Online makers are often cheaper for small stones and include a few lines of text. Whichever you choose, insist on a written proof before cutting.
